I. Specification of Pull test equipment for trunk risk assessment PiCUS TreeQinetic

Load test:

  • The PiCUS TreeQinetic pull test equipment for trunk risk assessment is used to perform load tests (or pull tests) on trees requiring advanced tree risk assessment. The TreeQinetic load test measures both the flexural strength of the tree trunk and the anchorage strength of the tree root system.

    • PiCUS TreeQinetic - the most consistent and advanced development
    • New frequency range up to 868 MHz
    • Longer test reach - up to 60 m . operating range
    • Greater reliability - radio connection is less prone to interference and more stable
    • Upgradable - older systems can be updated.

Principle of measurement:

PiCUS TreeQinetic
  • During the tensile test, a load (replacement of wind) is applied to the tree by a winch and a steel cable.
  • The response of the tree to stress under this specified load was measured with high resolution instruments (elastometer and inclinometer), the obtained data being compared with the acoustic trees. The main components considered in such calculations are the wind load (surface of the load-bearing structure, tree height, etc.) and the material properties of the greenwood.
  • The TreeQinetic elastometer measures the tension of the wood fibers of a tree trunk. The TreeQinetic Inclinometer measures the inclination of the base plate. The recorded data are being processed using arbostat analysis software. The arbostat software exactly compares that data with the results of a tree wind load analysis.
  • The calculation results are shown in the diagrams showing the safety of the trunk and the stability of the roots. In case the calculated margin of safety is too low, the software will give recommendations and risk reduction measures.
  • PiCUS TreeQinetic tools for load testing accurately measure tree tearing with tensile loads. Up to 9 sensors (Elastometer, Inclinometer, Forcemeter) can be used at the same time. All data is recorded continuously at the connected PC. The sensors can be connected wirelessly using a zigbee radio connection or by cable.

Compression and tension strain gauge Elastometer and Elastometer 3i:

  • Elastometer is a device that measures the strain (compression and tension) of the marginal fibers of the stem.
The latest version, the Elastometer 3i is capable of measuring both tension and inclination at the point of installation along the stem. The information about the curvature and curvature of the trunk can be calculated. This aids in the analysis of possible trunk defects in old grafts and at old pruning wounds. Force meter using TreeQinetic Forcemeter:

  • TreeQinetic Forcemeter is a force meter used to excite trees during load testing.
  • It features an inbuildt inclinometer to measure the angle of traction during load testing.
TreeQinetic Forcemeter
Resolution 0,01 kN
Accuracy 0,3 kN
Measuring range 0 – 40 kN
Duration of operation (accu) ~ 15 h at 20°C (radio connection to PC)

TreeQinetic Overload Index:

  • The device TreeQinetic overload indicator helps to match the winch force and the device operator on a laptop.
  • The device is attached to the tree like an inclinometer. The measuring program monitors the measured values of force-, elasto- and inclinometer.
  • At a limit set by the user, an alert is triggered. When the indicator light is green, the pulling force can be increased until the rated pulling force of the winch is reached. The device then reacts with a bright red flashlight and a special warning tone.
